Compiled APL

George Gawenda and Robert Bernecky will discuss the topic of compiling APL.

In particular, George will present the APL2C APL compiler, which is freely available as source code and may be installed on a system with the Gnu C compiler, such as Unix (including Linux) or DOS.

The APL2C compiler is the result of Sam Sirlin's work over the last 7 years based on Tim Budd's original APL compiler.

The talk will cover obtaining and installing the compiler, a comparison of similarities to and differences from a typical APL interpreter, some experiences in writing code for the compiler, and some benchmarks. The focus will be on the amount of work necessary install and use the compiler, as well as the results to be obtained in return.

Robert Bernecky will demo his APEX compiler on WinNT/Linux, and show some of the unexpected benefits of running APL code through a compiler.

Some of these include:

He will also expand on George's discussion of his experience with compiling APL, and may talk about areas where one compiler might outperform the other (today), and where an interpreter has an edge over a compiler.
