MARSHALL EARL KLEIN Contact: 567 Wilmot Road Scarsdale, NY 10804 phone 914 654 8366 email: 105142.527@compuserve.com OBJECTIVE Seeking business programming development or maintenance position using APL2 application programming skills in an IBM VM/CMS mainframe environment. SUMMARY Thirty years in computer mainframe application programming including: Application Enhancement and Maintenance - Improved systems performance, reliability, and end user productivity. Application Design: Proven ability to identify, analyze, formulate and design customized solutions for sales reporting applications. Computer Language Skills: APL2, SQL/DS, ISQL, QMF, REXX, and XEDIT in a VM/CMS environment. Experience prior to 1976 with COBOL, MVS/TSO, and System/360 Basic Assembler Language. EXPERIENCE Smith Barney, NYC Consultant June - November 1994, then Senior programmer analyst January 1995 - January 1997. Enhanced and maintained Smith Barney's mutual fund sales and revenue reporting system. Used APL2 with SQL/DS and APL Sharefile databases, to significantly reduce program run times, and improve processing efficiency and end-user productivity. Multifact Business Concepts, Inc., Pleasantville, NY under contract to IBM. Consultant March 1992 - September 1993. Provided application expertise, APL2 programming and documentation, and continued support of critical data base reporting sytems. International Business Machines Corporation, White Plains, NY 1966 - 1991 Promoted seven times in twenty-five years. Positions held include Senior Associate Programmer, Systems Engineer, Staff Programmer Analyst, and Advisory Programmer Analyst. International Business Machines Experience IBM had multiple application systems with duplicated functions and resources. Integrated three separate applications into one system to support company-wide sales measurement requirements; elliminated costs for two entire systems. Designed major portions of the new system. Developed powerful and unique data inquiry and retrieval functions which became standard in follow on systems. A full blown system to support the tracking of IBM Special Bids was more than a year away from being ready to use. Developed an interim tracking system within three months. Utilized APL programming with data base inquiry and report generation products (ADRS & APLDI) to create user friendly menus, inquiry and reporting functions, and a data security facility. IBM's Commercial analysis department needed a data entry/retrieval system in a time frame not achievable using traditional support services. As staff programmer-analyst installed and implemented an IBM 3790 distributed processing system with host communications to a master data base, which allowed analysts to capture competitive market information previously unavailable. Subsequently replaced the hardware with IBM 8100 machines. User response times for frequently used summarizations in a large data base system were unacceptably high, being over 10 minutes most of the time. Tuned critical sections of APL2/SQL logic, resulting in a 70 to 90% performance improvement. An inflexible sales tracking and measurement system did not support current business marketing channels. Rewrote system from PL/I to APL to meet current and future business needs. Reduced system maintenance costs by replacing home grown data base code with SQL/DS. A staff maintenance position for a sophisticated Business Analysis System was unexpectedly vacated. Offered to fill the job. Over three years automated system maintenance functions and reduced time requirements by over 70%. At end of system life cycle built interface to an alternate business data base which allowed critical applications to continue to run.
